High School Educator

The Prospect Park Alliance is seeking a Part-Time Prospect Park High School Educator for its Education Department. This is an exciting opportunity for an educator with a background in science, nature programs or environmental studies to teach in an innovative program that partners the Park with BASE, the Brooklyn Academy of Science and the Environment, a small public high school in Brooklyn now in its fifth year.

The High School Educator is responsible for delivering Field Studies, a 9th grade course offered in an outdoor setting where students learn scientific thinking and research skills through real-world field projects, in conjunction with their classroom teacher. This job includes preparing for and wrapping up each 2/12 hour teaching session. There is weekly training by and regular co-teaching with the High School Programs Supervisor, to whom the Educator reports. The schedule is 3-4 hours each afternoon, Monday-Friday for seven weeks during April-May 2008. The position re-opens in the fall, September-December.
Additional work opportunities delivering Prospect Park Audubon Center elementary and middle school programs may be available.

Candidates should possess a Bachelor’s degree in science, environmental education, environmental studies, education, or a related field along with proven classroom management skills with high school students. Equivalent life experience will be considered. Candidates must possess strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team. NYS Driver’s License required, along with willingness and ability to drive Park vehicles. An interest in and ability to teach science to teens with diverse backgrounds (academic, economic, ethnic) in non-formal settings is critical. The ideal candidate will possess an understanding and commitment to an inquiry-based approach to real-world learning; conservation and environmental awareness; and a wonder and appreciation for the natural world.
Salary: $15-$20 an hour, depending on experience.

The Prospect Park Alliance offers an excellent benefits package. The Prospect Park Alliance is an equal opportunity employer. To apply please email resume and cover letter to job058@prospectpark.org.
