Supervising Educator, Public Programs

The Supervising Educator of Public Programs reports to the Manager of Education Programs and is responsible for coordinating all aspects of the Prospect Park Audubon Center’s programming for public audiences. The Supervising Educator of Public Programs directly supervises and assists in the training of staff, including: program staff, high school interns, boat captains, and volunteers. Additional responsibilities include coordinating the Electric Boat program, managing the boathouse during public hours, public program development, and onsite public event coordination.

Schedule: Tuesday through Saturday (9 a.m. - 5 p.m.):
35 hours per week, with some Sunday and evening work as needed.

Responsibilities:
• Coordinate the research, development, and oversight of Public Programs including but not limited to: special events, adult and family tours, trail interpretation, exhibit guides, art exhibits, adult programs, and family programs
• Perform House Manager duties at the Audubon Center Thursday-Saturday
• Coordination of the Electric Boat program
• Supervision of the Park Youth Representative employment program at PPAC including direct supervision and scheduling
• Supervision of public per diem education staff at PPAC including direct supervision and scheduling
• Assist Manager of Education programs in training public and school/group program staff.
• Coordination of the care for in house exhibits, including computers
• Working in coordination with other PPAC staff in the recruitment, maintenance and supervision of volunteers
• Oversight of school programs one day/week and additionally, as needed
• Assist in the oversight of gift shop and boat ticket sales
• Assist in marketing efforts of the Education Department
• Assist in ordering and maintaining public program and exhibit materials.
• Teach school and group programs, as needed.
• Leading weekend Discover Tours, as needed

Qualifications:
• 2-5 years education experience in a public programs setting. Experience at a nature center, environmental education center, or science center preferred
• 1 year supervisory experience required, 2-4 years preferred
• Basic knowledge (advanced knowledge preferred) of natural history
• B.S./B.A. in non-profit management, education, environmental studies, environmental education, science, or related field
• Demonstrated understanding of principles of teaching in non-formal settings
• Excellent public presentation and communication skills
• Understanding of and commitment to conservation and environmental awareness, as well as wonder and appreciation for the natural world
• Must possess a valid NYS drivers license
