| Restored Environment & More Green Space

Site plan - click to enlarge | Lakeside will create significantly more green space in Prospect Park for visitors to enjoy. Plans call for: restoring more than 26 acres in the southeast quadrant of the Park; adding more than a hundred new trees and 5 acres of water; rebuilding Prospect Lake’s Music Island, an element of the original 1874 Olmsted & Vaux design for the Park, as a wildlife sanctuary; and habitat restoration for the more than 200 species of birds, fish and reptiles that call Prospect Lake home. The existing picnic grounds to the south of the new Lakeside Center will be expanded and enhanced with new plantings, and its centrally-located terrace will bring Park visitors right up to the edge of one thousand linear feet of restored shoreline and a new boat dock.
In addition, a picturesque historic reconstruction of the lower Concert Grove terrace with its historic ornamentation and ornamental wall will return the Concert Grove to Olmsted’s original design and repair in full the losses suffered when Wollman Rink was constructed in 1961.

The current view of Wollman Rink juxtaposed with the Park's landscape architects' vision of a reconstructed Music Island.
Pending funding, construction on Lakeside is expected to begin in 2009 and be completed by late 2011. If you are interested in supporting Lakeside at Prospect Park, please contact Caledonia Kearns at (718) 965-8985 or via email.
