WW I Memorial Restoration at Lakeside |

As we pause on Memorial Day to honor those who died in the armed services of the United States, the Prospect Park Alliance felt it appropriate to highlight the World War One Memorial in Prospect Park. The memorial honors the citizens of Brooklyn who sacrificed their lives during World War I, and was donated to the Park in 1921 by Red Hook shipbuilder William Todd.

In early April, the New York Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects presented the Prospect Park Alliance with a 2012 Chapter Design Award to recognize the meticulous restoration of the most formal area of the Park - Lakeshore and Music Island. The Prospect Park Alliance is proud of the recognition that Christian Zimmerman, Crystal Gaudio and Laura Evans of the Design and Construction office have recently received for their work on this project.

Construction on Phase Two of Lakeside, which includes two buildings and the covered and open-air rinks, continues to proceed on-time and on-budget. The concrete for both rinks have been poured and by this time next year they will be open for ice-skating.

In May 2012, Music Island – part of Olmsted and Vaux’s original design for Prospect Park and buried under the old Wollman Rink – became an island once again. Music Island and the restoration of Lakeshore were made possible by a generous gift from the Leon Levy Foundation.
