Woodlands Youth Crew
Since 1997, high school students have been instrumental in the restoration of Prospect Park’s 250 acres of fragile woodlands; Brooklyn’s last forest. By countering erosion, removing invasive vegetation, and planting native plants, the Woodlands Youth Crew has given new life to some of the most damaged areas in the Park. In addition to making the Park a more beautiful place to visit, they have made the Park’s woodlands more sustainable and a better habitat for a wide range of wildlife.
The Woodlands Youth Crew is more than just a work program. While shaping the future of Brooklyn’s last forest, participants learn about the natural environment and restoration techniques. Crew members also attend special Friday events, which expand their knowledge of job opportunities and the environment, including trips to the Greenbelt Nursery, Harriman State Park, Floyd Bennett Field, and Jamaica Bay. Participants should be prepared for outdoor conditions and physically demanding work.
