Small-Scale Events

If you want to have an activity in Prospect Park with more than 20 people but less than 500, or you would like to reserve a specific area within the Park, you need to apply for a special event permit. Small-scale events in Prospect Park include picnics, BBQs, family reunions, field days, or events of a similar nature.


Please fill out an application online at https://nyceventpermits.nyc.gov/Parks/  and pay a non-refundable $25 application fee with a credit or debit card. 
We require at least 21 to 30 days to process an application for small-scale events (events that do not require a proposal). 

Depending on the specific details of your event, you may need to submit a security bond. The bond is refundable if participants/organizers comply with the rules and regulations of the Park in full. Click here to read the security bond requirements.

Additional requirements and restrictions

  • We do not allow tents or canopies, balloons, amplified sound, generators, inflatable structures, and alcoholic beverages are not allowed for small-scale events.
  • We do not issue permits for events on major holiday weekends. We also do not issue permits for events on a Monday or the day after a major holiday. We also do not issue permits for events on weekends from May 1 to September 30 at certain areas, including the Bandshell North and South, and Vanderbilt Lawn.
  • Permits are not issued for the Wellhouse Drive BBQ area at any time.
Large-Scale Events

In general, any event with more than 500 participants, as well as concerts, musical or theatrical performances, fairs, fund-raising events, or events of similar nature require a proposal. Click here to see proposal guidelines. A detailed proposal should be submitted to the Special Events Office. After your proposal is submitted, it will be reviewed and you will be contacted.

Our standard requirements, where applicable, include, but are not limited to, a refundable bond fee, certificate of insurance together with the Broker certification form, and a sound permit. An event that has 5,000 participants or more also requires an NYC and/or NYS a Department of Health permit. Other government agencies’ permits may be required as well.

Film/Photo Shoots

With a staggering array of natural features, historic landscapes, striking architecture, and great people, Prospect Park is a perfect location for film, television, and photo shoots. Our courteous, professional staff can guide you through the permit process and ensure that your crew is taken care of - whether you’re shooting an independent documentary or a Hollywood blockbuster.

Prospect Park offers world-class facilities for your crew. Need a place to eat? A conveniently located restroom? A good local caterer? A place for the wrap party? The Park’s got it covered.

Submit your inquiry to events@prospectpark.org and we will e-mail or fax you all the necessary information.
Please note that NYC Dept. of Parks & Recreation guidelines for filming and photography in City Parks are applicable in Prospect Park. Please submit your application a minimum of 7 to 14 days in advance for review. Depending on the nature of production, a meeting to discuss logistics may be required. 

After you have obtained the date and location approval from Prospect Park Special Events Office, for most film shoots you will need to forward to our office the following documents for final approval and authorization:

  • The Original Film Shoot Permit issued from the Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre, and Broadcasting (MOFTB)
  • The Original Schedule A issued from the Mayor's Office
  • An updated Insurance Certificate with the following added insureds:
    • The Prospect Park Alliance
    • The City of New York Department of Parks & Recreation
    • The City of New York

Ballfields at Prospect Park and Parade Ground

Organized leagues or special events need a permit to use an athletic field or court. Prospect Park Park users can play at the Long Meadow Ballfields, Prospect Park Tennis Center or the Prospect Park Parade Ground.

  • Sports Permit
    To obtain a sports permit please fill out the on-line application. There is no $25 application fee associated with one- day events only.
  • Ballfield Permits
    There is a sports permit fees for groups with players over 18 years of age.
Sports Fees
  • Adult basketball: $8 per hour
  • Adult baseball, softball and volleyball: $12.50 per hour per field
  • All other sports (soccer, football, frisbee, etc.): $16 per hour per field
  • Field with lights: $25 per hour

Walks, Runs, and Cycling Races

The type of permit for walks, runs, and cycling races depends on the size of your event:

Depending on a size of your event, you may need to submit a certificate of insurance, a security bond and possible other fees. A detailed proposal may be required.

Your safety is very important to us; thus, we require that at least one person responsible for organizing the event should have experience in putting on athletic events in a public roadway. This person must be named and identified on the applications. References and/or verification of experience may also be required.
