Park Circle Entrance, 1896 Photograph by John C. Hemmot. Original photograph courtesy of The Brooklyn Historical Society. Digital copy available at the Prospect Park Archives.
Designed in 1896 by McKim, Mead and White, the Park Circle entrance is located at the intersection of Prospect Park Southwest, Coney Island Avenue, Fort Hamilton Parkway, and Parkside Avenue. This photograph predates the arrival of the notable Horse Tamers - a pair of bronze statues sculpted by Brooklyn-born sculptor Frederick MacMonnies in 1898. The statues rest atop two granite pedestals designed by Stanford White a few years earlier. The Horse Tamers are perhaps MacMonnies' greatest contributions to the Park.
