Help make the Shirley Chisholm Welcome Center a reality!

Prospect Park Alliance is advocating for funding support from the New York City Council to transform a disused building at the Parkside and Ocean Avenue Entrance to Prospect Park into the Shirley Chisholm Welcome Center.

Lend your voice to this effort by sending a letter of support via this form to New York City Council Speaker Cory Johnson and members of the Brooklyn Delegation of the City Council whose districts border the project, Majority Leader Laurie Cumbo and Members Brad Lander and Mathieu Eugene, as well as the co-chairs of the Brooklyn Delegation, Alicka Ampry-Samuels and Mark Treyger:

I am writing to ask that you support funding for the Shirley Chisholm Welcome Center at the Ocean Avenue and Parkside Avenue entrance to Prospect Park. As a resident of Brooklyn, this project is very important to me.

In 2020, through the support of the New York City Council, $2.25 million was allocated from the city budget of the $5.5 million in funding needed to transform this disused building into the Shirley Chisholm Welcome Center. The Welcome Center will complement the new monument to Brooklyn trailblazer Shirley Chisholm at this park entrance: the first celebrating a woman, and also the first for a Black hero, in Prospect Park. By securing the additional $3.25 million in funding from the New York City Council, the Alliance will be able to move forward this transformational project, which will include an exhibition on the life and legacy of Shirley Chisholm, and a public restroom for visitors.
