Carousel Operator and Maintainer

Founded in 1987, Prospect Park Alliance is the non-profit organization that sustains, restores and advances Prospect Park, "Brooklyn's Backyard," in partnership with the City. The Alliance provides critical staff and resources that keep the park green and vibrant for the diverse communities that call Brooklyn home.

Be part of the driving force that sustains Prospect Park, Brooklyn's flagship park. Prospect Park Alliance seeks a full-time, seasonal Carousel Operator and Maintainer. Reporting to the Director of Concessions, this position oversees the day to day operations of the Prospect Park Carousel, which includes operating the Carousel and performing some maintenance and upkeep as needed. The Carousel is a beloved and historic feature of Prospect Park, typically receiving roughly 70,000 visits each year.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safe and pleasurable operation of the Carousel for the public
  • Ensure the safety and protection of patrons boarding, riding and disembarking the Carousel, including seatbelt checks for all riders
  • Ensure all riders follow proper ticketing procedures and all other rules before starting the ride
  • Supervise and train hourly staff who may  operate the Carousel during public hours and rental events
  • Supervise birthday party rentals and other rental events at the Carousel
  • Perform regular inspections of all mechanical and aesthetic aspects of the Carousel and record, report, and appropriately address any issues
  • Preserve the aesthetics of the Carousel building by painting, cleaning, and polishing the ride, the building, and all other surrounding fixtures as needed
  • Perform general maintenance on the Carousel, which may include lubricating the gears and other moveable parts
  • Maintain a positive atmosphere for all customers and staff at the Carousel
  • Other duties as assigned.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working with children and customer service experience a plus
  • Experience operating and/or maintaining amusement rides a plus
  • Ability to maintain a positive work atmosphere by communicating in a professional manner with customers, co-workers and supervisors, even during stressful situations
  • Ability to work all weekends and holidays during carousel season
  • Ability to work well in a fast-paced, demanding environment
  • Artistic ability and painting experience a plus
  • Experience maintaining and repairing sensitive equipment a plus
  • Driver’s License a plus
  • High School Diploma required

Schedule

The Carousel Operator and Maintainer position is full time and seasonal, 35 hours per week with additional time as needed from late March through November. The hours are typically Wednesday through Sunday, roughly from 9 am to 5 pm or 10 am to 6 pm, but hours may vary depending on private rentals. Holidays are also required.
