Director of Government + Community Relations

Founded in 1987, Prospect Park Alliance is the non-profit organization that sustains, restores and advances Prospect Park, "Brooklyn's Backyard," in partnership with the City. The Alliance provides critical staff and resources that keep the Park green and vibrant for the diverse communities that call Brooklyn home.

Prospect Park Alliance seeks a full time Director for Government and Community Relations to oversee and direct all aspects of the Alliance’s government and community relations activities. The Director serves as a liaison with all elected officials and government agencies advising the President and senior management team on legislation, funding opportunities, communications with legislators and on other government-related matters. The Director also oversees all aspects of community relations for Prospect Park including the Alliance’s Community Committee. The Director reports to the Chief Operating & Financial Officer and works closely with the Alliance’s President.

Responsibilities

  • Developing a plan for soliciting and securing City, State, and Federal government funding.
  • Keep up-to-date with potential government funding opportunities and work with colleagues to develop a list of needs to be funded.
  •  Researching, preparing, and submitting government grant requests.
  • Track the processing of awarded grants, ensuring compliance with grant regulations and timely closing out of grants.
  • Planning and securing meetings with elected officials on the City, State, and Federal levels.
  • Tracking relevant City Council legislation, hearings and testimony – drafting testimony if needed.
  • Interfacing with the Alliance’s Board of Directors as needed.
  • Attending functions as a representative of the Alliance.
  • Inviting or otherwise involving elected officials in Prospect Park functions, events, and identifying and coordinating such ceremonial activities as ribbon cuttings and ground breakings.
  • Liaising with external advocacy groups and government agencies as needed.
  • Overseeing all community outreach for Prospect Park, including developing a strategy, maintaining and broadening new relationships and partnerships, identifying and resolving issues, responding to questions and concerns as needed.
  • Supervising the External Affairs Assistant.
  • Other duties as assigned, including special projects as directed by the COO/CFO and/or the President.

Desired Qualifications

  •  A Bachelors or Masters degree in a related field.
  • Strong advocacy, written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong contacts with the local government officials and communities that surround Prospect Park.
  • A track record of success in government fundraising, including the administration of grants.
  • Experience working with legislative, budget, and community affairs within the office of an elected official and a working knowledge of the City’s budget process
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact with a wide range of personalities including government officials, public figures, community leaders, staff, volunteers and members of the public.
  • The experience and maturity to supervise and direct staff.
  • A driver’s license valid in the state of New York and the willingness and ability to drive Park vehicles.

The Director of Government & Community Relations is a full-time position with a salary that is commensurate with qualifications and experience. This position is eligible for benefits including a tax-deferred 403(b) plan and requires a flexible schedule that includes working occasional evenings and weekends.
