Forest Ecologist

The Prospect Park Alliance is currently seeking a Forest Ecologist to implement and carry out both ecological restoration and related scientific monitoring projects to assess the success of the Park’s long term restorations.  This individual reports to the Natural Resources Supervisor and works as a member of the Natural Resources Crew to carry out additional day to day tasks. 


  • Removal of invasive species using both mechanical and chemical means
  •  Operation and careful maintenance of equipment from hand tools, chainsaws, weedwhackers, augers and large wood chippers
  •  Installation of various erosion control and soil management strategies to alleviate erosion and amend or ameliorate soil compaction
  • Planting and maintenance of natives tree, shrub and herbaceous species in project areas
  •  Removal of garbage and snow
  • Conduct and supervise the vegetation survey; including recruitment , hiring and supervision of interns
  • Collection of field data, data entry, statistical analyses, and report preparation for ongoing monitoring
  • Train and supervise various semi-skilled and unskilled workers such as volunteers and seasonal staff,
  • Work with the NRC supervisor to take responsibility for ecological restoration projects, including plant specification and nursery ordering
  • Work in collaboration with the Supervisor and Director  to serve as a liaison with federal, state, and local authorities, community groups and individuals in regard to forest restoration


  • Bachelor ‘s degree or higher in Ecology, Biology, Forestry, Limnology,  Natural Resource Management, Fisheries or related field from an accredited university or three year’s field experience in any of the areas of Biology, Ecology, Forestry, or Natural Resource Management.
  • NYS DEC Pesticide Applicator’s License, or able to obtain one within 6 months.
  • NYS valid Driver’s License in good standing.
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and to work well with a team
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, GIS experience


  • Maintenance of membership in accepted local, state and national societies concerned with management of natural areas
  • Certification in CPR, first aid, and lifesaving
  • NYS Pesticide certified
  • Commercial Driver License


This is a full-time position with variable annual hours.  From May-November the position works Tuesdays through Saturdays; from December to April  the position works Mondays through Fridays.
