Forestry Technician (Seasonal)

 The Prospect Park Alliance is a non-profit organization that works in partnership with City of New York and the community to restore, maintain and operate Prospect Park, Brooklyn’s flagship Park. The Alliance cares for the natural environment, preserves historic design, and serves the community by providing public programming and Park amenities. Recently, the Prospect Park Alliance completed Lakeside, the most ambitious project in Prospect Park since its creation. The 26-acre redesign of the southeast corner of the Park features the LeFrak Center at Lakeside, designed by the architects Billie Tsien and Tod Williams in collaboration with the Alliance, which provides seasonal ice skating, water play and a café, as well as the restoration of the surrounding landscape.

 The Prospect Park Alliance is currently seeking two (2) Forestry Technicians to work under the NRC Foreperson to perform all field duties relevant to Hurricane Sandy Woodlands Restoration.  This position reports to the Natural Resources Supervisor.

 Responsibilities:

  • Vegetation control of exotic invasive species using both mechanical and chemical means
  • Operation of machines and equipments, such as weed whackers, augers, chainsaws, trucks, tractors, and chippers in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Maintenance of all such equipment
  • Installation of various erosion control structures such as cribbing and water bars to alleviate erosion
  • Amendment of compacted soil and installation and repair of fence to protect sites
  • Proper planting and maintenance of native trees, shrub and herbaceous species in project areas
  • Maintain edges of woodland and passive management areas throughout the growing season by mowing and weed whacking
  • Maintain all licenses necessary to carry out duties
  • Work with and instruct contractors, volunteers, interns, and students at times to accomplish various woodland tasks
  • Continues to learn more about natural ecosystems and their management whenever the opportunity arises
  • Maintain a positive work attitude by behaving and communicating in a cooperative manner with co-workers, supervisors, and the public
  • Performance of all other job-related tasks as assigned

 Qualifications:

 Required:

  • Bachelor‘s degree in Biology, Limnology, Ecology, Forestry, Fisheries or Natural Resource Management.
  • Related field from an accredited university or two year’s field experience in any of the areas of Biology, Ecology, Forestry, or Natural Resource Management
  • Valid NYS driver’s license

 Desirable:

  • NYS Class B CDL Driver’s License in good standing
  • Membership in accepted local, state, and national societies concerned with management of natural areas
  • Certification in CPR, first aid, and lifesaving
  • NYS DEC Pesticide Applicator’s License, or able to obtain one within 3 months of employment
  • Familiarity with 2 and 4 stroke engine upkeep and basic repair

 Schedule:

 This is a temporary position beginning April 15 2016 and ending January 20 2017. This is a 40-hour-per -week Monday through Friday 7:00am – 3:30pm position with an hourly rate of $17.25.

 This position is eligible for benefits including a tax-deferred 403(b) plan.
