Government & Community Relations Assistant

The Prospect Park Alliance is a non-profit organization that works in partnership with City of New York and the community to restore, maintain and operate Prospect Park, Brooklyn’s flagship Park. The Alliance cares for the natural environment, preserves historic design, and serves the community by providing public programming and Park amenities for the Park, which receives more than 10 million visits each year. Recently, the Prospect Park Alliance completed Lakeside, the most ambitious project in Prospect Park since its creation. The 26-acre redesign of the southeast corner of the Park features the LeFrak Center at Lakeside, designed by the architects Billie Tsien and Tod Williams in collaboration with the Alliance, which provides seasonal ice skating, water play and a café, as well as the restoration of the surrounding landscape. 

Prospect Park Alliance seeks a Government & Community Relations Assistant who will be responsible for assisting with the coordination of community affairs, government relations, responding to requests for information and other issues raised by the public. Reporting to the Director of Government & Community Relations, and will also be responsible for organizing, tracking, and reporting on government grants, critical sources of funding for the Alliance. 

Responsibilities

  • Developing working relationships with community groups and partner organizations
  • Coordinating meetings of the Prospect Park Community Committee
  • Monitoring and responding to inquiries from the public; identifying trends in public inquiries
  • Conducting relevant research on community issues in collaboration with staff across the organization
  • Assisting with the administrative aspects of relations with elected officials
  • Assisting with the preparation of government grant proposals
  • Developing and preparing internal reports, documentation, and communications as needed to support government grants
  • Managing and maintaining internal tracking, records, and task management documents pertinent to grant activities
  • Other job-related business duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university
  • One to two years relevant experience including community affairs
  • Commitment to the Alliance's mission
  • Candidates should possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and must be a pro-active self-starter
  • Superior attention to detail and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Photoshop)
  • Driver's license valid in the state of New York and the ability and willingness to drive Park vehicles is preferred

Schedule

The Government & Community Relations Assistant is 9am to 5pm, Monday through Friday at 35 hours per week with occasional evening and weekend work.
