Government and Community Relations Coordinator

Prospect Park Alliance is the non-profit organization that sustains, restores, and advances Prospect Park, “Brooklyn’s Backyard”, in partnership with the City. The Alliance was founded in 1987 to help restore the Park after a long period of deterioration and decline. Today, the Alliance provides critical staff and resources that keep the Park green and vibrant for the diverse communities that call Brooklyn home. The Alliance cares for the woodlands and natural areas, restores the Park’s buildings and landscapes, creates innovative Park destinations, and provides volunteer, education and recreation programs. Prospect Park is one of Brooklyn’s most treasured destinations with more than 10 million visits each year.

Prospect Park Alliance seeks a Government & Community Relations Coordinator. The Government & Community Relations Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating tasks of the department of Government and Community Outreach, responding to requests for information and other issues raised by the public. The Coordinator will also be responsible for organizing, tracking, and reporting on government grants, critical sources of funding for the Alliance. The Coordinator will report to the Director of Government & Community Relations. 

Main Responsibilities

  • Developing working relationships with community groups and partner organizations
  • Coordinating meetings of the Prospect Park Community Committee which includes scheduling the meeting, recording and tracking concerns/responses and attendance, coordinating follow-ups/next steps and other relevant tasks
  • Monitoring and responding to inquiries from the public, identifying trends in public inquiries, and compiling important inquires/complaints into a report to be shared with Senior Staff
  • Conducting relevant research on community issues in collaboration with staff across the organization
  • Assisting with the administrative aspects of relations with elected officials
  • Coordinating the preparation of government grant proposals, reimbursement requests, finalizing grant contracts and other grant related correspondence
  • Developing and preparing internal reports, documentation, and communications as needed to support government grants
  • Managing and maintaining internal tracking, records, and task management documents pertinent to grant activities
  • Maintaining all documents, databases, and systems used by the Government Relations team, and updating information as necessary
  • Coordinating and conducting monthly government grants meetings which includes scheduling the meeting, providing updates on current grant activity, tracking current grant activity overseen by other departments, and coordinating follow-ups/next steps and other relevant tasks
  • Producing, assembling and distributing internal and external communications and materials such as briefing folders, program descriptions, letters, and emails
  • Working in conjunction with other staff members to support shared initiatives
  • Other job-related business duties as assigned


  • One to two years relevant experience including community affairs
  • Commitment to the Alliance's mission
  • Candidates should possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and must be a pro-active self-starter
  • Superior attention to detail and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Driver's license valid in the state of New York and the ability and willingness to drive Park vehicles is preferred
