Museum Educator/ House Manager

Be part of the driving force that sustains Prospect Park, Brooklyn's flagship park. The Prospect Park Alliance, the nonprofit that restores and advances the Park, seeks a part-time Museum Educator/House Manager to help present public programs at Lefferts Historic House. The Museum Educator/House Manager will work with other Lefferts staff members to deliver engaging and interactive programs, tours and exhibits that connect visitors to Brooklyn’s past.  

Responsibilities:
As Museum Educator

  • Introducing visitors to the museum experience
  • answering visitor inquiries
  • leading workshops, activities and tours of 2nd floor exhibits
  • assisting during special events

As House Manager

  • supervising a staff of three high school students
  • managing birthday parties
  • opening and closing the museum when supervising as a House Manager

Qualifications:

  • Excellent presentation and communication skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Some supervisory experience preferred but not necessary
  • Familiarity with historic preservation and/or  museum education
  • An interest in Brooklyn and New York City history
  • The ability to make decisions in a fast-paced environment
  • The ability to work with visitors from diverse backgrounds
  • A willingness to work outside in all weather conditions
  • A desire to do hands-on work, often physical labor
  • A flexible schedule with the ability to work weekends
  • Valid license to drive in New York State a plus

Successful candidates will have experience working in a classroom, museum, or other informal educational setting and in a customer service role. Please be advised there is some lifting and physical labor involved in this position.

Starting salary for Museum Educators is at $16 per hour, $18 per hour when scheduled as a House Manager.  The museum is open Thursday-Sunday, April – October; Saturday – Sunday, November – December; and public school holidays.
 

Schedule:

Hours vary based on work availability and may include weekends, holidays and some evenings.  This position is not eligible for benefits except those mandated by state and federal law
