Prospect Park Walking Tour

Celebrate the 150th anniversary of Prospect Park on this special series of guided walking tours! These tours will examine the Park’s many layers of natural and human history. Prospect Park is a reflection of Brooklyn; its history traces that of the city around it, and it is today an important gathering place for many diverse communities that call the borough home. Learn about Prospect Park Alliance’s historic restoration and environmental preservation work in the Park, including cultural and recreation projects currently underway.

Behind the Scenes at Lefferts

Discover what’s behind the scenes at the Lefferts Historic House. In honor of the Park’s 150th anniversary, Prospect Park Alliance is offering a special tour  of  this 18th century farmhouse. Learn about its  Dutch-American architecture and the changing landscape of Brooklyn, and then  explore our  storage areas to view  rarely seen collections items.

The Connective Project at Pioneer Works: Pinwheel Workshop

Sunday, August 13 , 4:30 pm – 6:30 pm

Join Prospect Park Alliance in the garden at Pioneer Works for a chance to design your own pinwheel as part of the garden installation of The Connective Project! While you’re here, you’ll also have a chance to take home pinwheels from emerging artists. The workshop is part of The Connective Project, an immersive community art installation that celebrates the 150th anniversary of Prospect Park.

The Connective Project at Pioneer Works

Join Prospect Park Alliance in the garden at Pioneer Works to view a selection of pinwheels from The Connective Project, an immersive community art installation that celebrates the 150th anniversary of Prospect Park.

Join us on August 13 for a special Pinwheel-Making Workshop, and for the chance to take home an artist-edition pinwheel.

Conceived and developed by Area4 and ReddyMade Design, in collaboration with the Brooklyn Arts Council, BRIC, Brooklyn Museum, MoCADA, Pioneer Works and the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation.

This installation is on view Wednesday–Sunday, August 12–25, 2017. Visit the Pioneer Works website for up-to-date information.

Greenmarket at Bartel-Pritchard Square

Nature Exploration

Sunday, August 13 , 10 am – 1 pm

Join Prospect Park Alliance for fun nature activities to welcome the start of spring, and also participate in our 150th anniversary species count for special prizes.

Please note: on April 22nd, Nature Exploration will be replaced by special Earth Day programming. 

  • Discovery Pack, 10 am–12 pm: get inspired by nature with our new Discovery Packs, ready-to-go kits filled with nature activities for families.
  • Blooming Naturalist, 10 am: So you think you are a naturalist? Investigate the natural world by learning how to use tools and guides used by biologist. This activity leads you through activities to discover the Audubon Center and Prospect Park.
  • Nature’s Helpers, 11 am: Learn how to keep Prospect Park healthy by cleaning up the lakeshore, spreading mulch or removing invasive species. This is activity is led by Alliance staff and all materials are provided.

Smorgasburg Prospect Park

Sunday, August 13 , 11 am – 6 pm

Smorgasburg, the celebrated open-air food fair presented by Brooklyn Flea in partnership with Prospect Park Alliance, returns to Prospect Park this spring, kicking off on April 2 as part of Prospect Park's 150th Anniversary celebration! On Sundays through October 23, over 100 local and regional food purveyors will gather on Breeze Hill to offer a range of cuisines. This year, Prospect Park Alliance is partnering with Brooklyn Brewery to produce a special Prospect Park beer called Long Meadow Gold.

Pop-Up Audubon II: Gone Fishin' Clinics

Sunday, August 13 , 12 pm – 5 pm
  • Family Birdwatching: 12-1 pm: After learning how to use binoculars, participants of all ages can join Alliance Naturalists on a walk to learn how to identify the over 200 species of birds that call the Park home! This program leaves promptly at 12 pm.
  • Prospect Park Audubon Center's Gone Fishin' Clinics: 1:30 + 3:30 pm: Join the Prospect Park Alliance to learn about local fish species, responsible fishing practices, and instruction on how to use our spincasting rods. Instruction, tackle, and bait will be provided. This hour long program starts promptly at 1:30 pm and 3:30 pm, late participants cannot be accommodated. Presented by Con Edison.

Pop-Up Audubon II is most suitable for children 8 and over.

Pop-Up Audubon I: Macy’s Fishing Clinic

Sunday, August 13 , 12 pm – 5 pm

Join Alliance educators to learn about ecology under the water and in the air! Pop-Up Audubon I is most suitable for children 8 and under.

  • Macy’s Fishing Clinic, 1 + 3 pm: This popular summer program offers kids 15 & under the opportunity to fish.  Participants learn about aquatic ecology, fishing safety and will even get to collect their own bait. First come, first serve.
  • Family Bird Watching, 4 pm: After learning how to use binoculars, participants of all ages can join Alliance Naturalists on a walk to learn how to identify the over 200 species birds that call the Park home!

The Means of a Ready Escape: Brooklyn’s Prospect Park

In celebration of the 150th anniversary of Prospect Park, Brooklyn Historical Society and Prospect Park Alliance present an exhibition that celebrates the founding vision of the Park, traces its social and historical trajectories, and examines the important role that Prospect Park has played as “Brooklyn’s Backyard” for 150 years. 

The Brooklyn Historical Society is closed on major holidays.
