Lefferts Historic House History
The Lefferts family was among the earliest European settlers in Brooklyn. In 1687, Leffert Pietersen bought 58 acres of land in the area now known as Prospect Lefferts Gardens, where he built the original Lefferts Homestead. The Homestead was destroyed in 1776 by American troops, several days before the Battle of Brooklyn, so it could not be used by the British. A descendent of Leffert Pietersen rebuilt the homestead around 1783, and the family continued to live in the house until 1918, when it was donated to the City and moved to Prospect Park.
