Plant a Tree

You can plant a tree in Prospect Park to honor friends and loved ones or to celebrate special events or milestones. Your gift of a tree helps us replace lost trees and ensure a healthy Park. We will work with you to select a tree type and location. You can also adopt an existing tree instead of planting a new tree.

Please call (718) 965-8994 or email us to get started.

Long Meadow in autumn

Plant a New Tree

There are two tree planting periods per year: one week in the spring (usually end of April or beginning of May, depending on climate conditions) and one week in the fall (usually end of October or beginning of November, depending on climate conditions).

Spring planting:
The deadline for arranging a spring planting is February 15 (we must order trees from the nursery well in advance of the actual planting). Note there are numerous details to arrange before the deadline, so you will need to contact us by February 1 in order to conclude the arrangement process prior to the deadline. Generally, the earlier you contact us, the better. Please call (718) 965-8994 or email us to get started or to ask any questions.

Fall planting:
The deadline for arranging a fall planting is August 15 (we must order trees from the nursery well in advance of the actual planting). Note there are numerous details to arrange before the deadline, so you will need to contact us by August 1 in order to conclude the arrangement process prior to the deadline. Generally, the earlier you contact us, the better. Please call (718) 965-8994 or email us to get started or to ask any questions.

9/11 Grove

The Living Memorial Project, a program of the USDA Forest Service, has enabled the Prospect Park Alliance to establish a 9/11 Commemorative Grove at the north end of the Long Meadow, near Grand Army Plaza.

The Living Memorial Project was designed to create beautiful public sanctuaries for peace and reflection. Thus far, the Project’s $35,000 grant to Prospect Park has allowed the planting of 17 trees and shrubs in the grove area so far, 8 of which were planted in memory of 9/11 victims. The lush grove includes overstory oaks, black gum, and tulip trees; as well as shadbush, magnolia, fringe tree, witchhazel, and holly to fill the understory. The grant also enabled the pruning of existing trees in the area and the installation of eight benches, one of which has been adopted. More plantings will be added over time.

The Grove is also a crucial part of the Alliance’s restoration efforts, as this was a heavily wooded area in the original design of Prospect Park.

A dedication ceremony took place on September 4, 2003. For more information on the Living Memorials Project, please visit www.livingmemorialsproject.net.
