Earth Day in Prospect Park
Join Prospect Park Alliance this Earth Day for a day of celebrating our planet’s natural beauty and raising awareness about bird species that call it home. Learn about park stewardship and the ways we can all be Park Champions to support these feathered friends through hands-on activities and nature stations.
Also join these special activities:
12:30 pm: Nature Stroll
Join Alliance Naturalists in search of amazing birds and other nature around the park. Binoculars and bird guides are provided. This program departs from the Boathouse promptly at 12:30 pm.
1:30 pm: Opening Celebration: Risha Gorig, The Journey
Join Brooklyn-based artist Risha Gorig for a special opening celebration of her sculptural installation, The Journey, presented by NYC Parks Art in the Park in partnership with Prospect Park Alliance. The Journey takes the form of a flock of pink birds soaring through the sky, drawing connections between the migratory nature of birds and the vulnerability, resilience and transformation that shape human journeys. Kinetic and reminiscent of mobile art, the piece invites reflection on movement, change and our shared relationship to the natural world. Risha will provide introductory remarks and insights into her creative process. An accompanying indoor display featuring photographs and video documenting the development of the work will be on view from 1 to 4 pm.
2:30 pm: Something Positive, The Arrival
Prospect Park Alliance presents The Arrival, an original production by Something Positive, a New York City-based performing arts and education organization dedicated to preserving the art and culture of the African Diaspora and its cross-cultural influences. This dramatized, mythical retelling of how water came to Earth blends the creation myths of the Yoruba (Southwestern Nigeria) with science and technology for an intriguing, larger-than-life, multimedia performance. Extravagant dancing deities, live vocals and percussion, with powerful light projections, create an atmosphere of awe and excitement. Water is Life!
