Legend of Sleepy Hollow

Join Prospect Park Alliance for a community reading of Washington Irving’s “Legend of Sleepy Hollow” on the porch of Lefferts Historic House. The full version of this famous ghost story, written in 1820 but set in 1790, includes numerous references to the prevalence of slavery in southern New York at the end of the 18th century as well as lengthy descriptions of a Dutch American plantation house quite similar to Lefferts Historic House. Listen to this haunting old tale in a new way and stay for an informal discussion with staff and program partners following the story.

This event is part of Prospect Park Alliance’s ReImagine Lefferts initiative to re-envision the mission and programming of the museum to focus on exploring the lives, resistance and resilience of the Indigenous people of Lenapehoking and the Africans enslaved by the Lefferts family.
