Join Prospect Park Alliance to remember Black Brooklynites who fought to end slavery during the U.S. Civil War. Come listen to Frederick Douglas’ speech, “The Present and Future of the Colored Race in America,” which was first delivered at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in May 1863. Then hear a reading of the names of the men of color who followed Douglass’ call to volunteer to fight with the newly formed U.S. Colored Troops and learn about how their families’ commemorations of their heroism helped create Memorial Day.
