Brooklyn Roots Festival
The Folk Arts program of the Brooklyn Arts Council, in partnership with Prospect Park Alliance and the Brooklyn Public Library, will "stand clear" of 2020’s closing doors with a virtual online celebration of many of the cultural traditions found along Brooklyn’s 2,3,4,5 subway lines. Now in its third year, the 2020 Brooklyn Roots Festival features workshops, family activities, music and dance, along with rare glimpses of archival folk arts footage. We will fill the virtual airwaves with broadcasts of artists from their homes and also live from the Prospect Park Boathouse. Traditions include masquerade and steel pan traditions of Carnival and J’Ouvert, dance, and ritual from Haiti; Gospel and devotional song traditions;, spoken word; and Guyanese kweh-kweh pre-nuptial rituals to name just a few.
