Smorgasburg's Last Day

Smorgasburg in Prospect Park is bringing some of the upstate feeling to Brooklyn on the final day of the Sunday market, October 23. Several Smorgasburg Upstate vendors will come to Brooklyn for the day to sell food, the bar will have a special lineup of upstate cider and beer, and we’ll have live bluegrass from 1-3 pm. Join us at Breeze Hill starting at 11 am.

A Tree Grows in Greenpoint: Trees & The Built Environment

Do you want to know more about the trees in your parks and neighborhood? Join Audubon New York and Prospect Park Alliance in McGolrick Park, Greenpoint for this FREE hands-on workshop to learn why street trees are important for birds and the people of Brooklyn. Participants will use field guides to ID City trees by their different characteristics and participate in a tree survey to learn how scientists observe trees for health and disease.  Don’t miss this opportunity to become a tree expert!  Open to adults and families. Nature Exploration

Sunday, October 23 , 10 am – 1 pm, 2016

Join the Prospect Park Alliance for nature education programs at the Prospect Park Audubon Center, the first urban Audubon Center in the nation.

  • Nature Play, 10–11 am: Join Alliance naturalists and learn to appreciate the beauty of nature and develop self-reliance, creativity and problem-solving skills through different outdoor play-based activities.
  • Discovery Pack, 10 am–12 pm:  The Prospect Park Alliance invites you to get inspired by nature with our new Discovery Packs, a ready-to-go kits filled with nature activities for families.
  • Blooming Naturalists,12–1 pm: So you think you are a Naturalist? Find out at the Audubon Center by learning how to identify birds and use binoculars and field guides.
  • Introduction to Bird Watching, Saturdays, 12–1 pm: Look! Up in the sky, it’s a bird! But what kind of bird is it? Join the Prospect Park Alliance to learn about the magnificent array of birds that call Prospect Park home. Led by the Brooklyn Bird Club.

Nestled inside Prospect Park's tree-shaded southwest corner, this much-loved market, occuring every Sunday and Wednesday, is where South Slope and Windsor Terrace residents stock up on locally grown staples. Pop-Up Audubon II: Changing Seasons

The Prospect Park Alliance offers twice the Pop-Up fun with a second tent that explores the Park’s aquatic habitats. In October, explore how seasonal shifts affect the behavior of aquatic plants and animals in Prospect Park.

  • Discovery Pack, 10 am–2 pm: The Prospect Park Alliance invites you to get inspired by nature with our new Discovery Packs, a ready-to-go kits filled with nature activities for families.
  • Lullwater Excursion, 11–12 pm: Join Alliance naturalists for a guided nature walk exploring the unique ecosystems surrounding the Lullwater.
  • Junior Naturalists, 12–1 pm: Investigate how changing seasons influence both aquatic life and the water chemistry of the Lullwater.
  • Nature’s Helpers, 1–2 pm: Let’s lend a helping hand to make our park a better place.  Learn how mulch helps trees, spread wood chips or protect the environment by removing damaging litter.
  • Family Bird Watching, 2–3 pm: After learning how to use binoculars, join our naturalists to identify some of the 250 species of birds that call Prospect Park home.

Pop-Up Audubon: Fantastic Foliage

Brooklyn's last-remaining forest becomes a real-world laboratory for hands-on discovery. Join the Prospect Park Alliance to take an in-depth look at the largest organism within this habitat, its trees!

  • Nature Play, 10–2 pm: Alliance naturalists teach children to  appreciate the beauty of nature and develop self-reliance, creativity and problem-solving skills through different outdoor play-based activities. Program includes opportunities to play in giant piles of leaves, paint with mud, and more!
  • Nature’s Helpers, 1 pm: Did you know that trees help trees? After learning how mulch protects tree roots, spend time spreading wood chips around trees.
  • Family Bird Watching, 2 pm: Did you know that as an Important Bird Area, Prospect Park supports an exceptional diversity of migrating birds and is an essential stopover for about 250 species of birds? After learning how to use binoculars, participants of all ages can join Alliance Naturalists on a walk to learn how to identify these birds!

Celebrate fall at Lefferts with the old Dutch craft Scharen Knippen. Join the Prospect Park Alliance to cut out autumn and halloween scenes and patterns, some designed in the 19th century by Mrs. Lefferts herself. While you're here join us for potato sack races and other fun historic toys and games.

REI Introduction to Map & Compass Class - Level 1

Sunday, October 23 , 10 am – 2 pm, 2016

During this field outing, we'll help you see three dimensions of the land in the two dimensions of a topographic map by teaching you how to read contour lines, landmarks and other map features. We'll also talk about magnetic north, true north, and magnetic variation (declination), and help you make sense of it all. From there, you'll learn how to take a bearing from the terrain and your map so that you can triangulate your position and plan a route. Maps and compasses will be provided.
