Open House New York in Prospect Park

Join Prospect Park Alliance to get a behind-the-scenes look at Prospect Park during Open House New York Weekend. For two days each October, the annual Open House New York Weekend unlocks the doors of New York’s most iconic areas, offering an extraordinary opportunity to experience the city. This year, Prospect Park Alliance is partnering with Turnstile Tours to present a free one-hour version of their Prospect Park Walking Tour. The tour will examine the many layers of natural and human history within Brooklyn's Backyard.

Nature Exploration

Saturday, October 14 , 10 am – 1 pm

Join Prospect Park Alliance for fun nature activities each weekend, and also participate in our 150th anniversary species count for special prizes.

  • Discovery Pack, 10 am–12 pm: get inspired by nature with our new Discovery Packs, ready-to-go kits filled with nature activities for families.
  • Blooming Naturalist, 10 am: So you think you are a naturalist? Investigate the natural world by learning how to use tools and guides used by biologist. This activity leads you through activities to discover the Audubon Center and Prospect Park.
  • Nature’s Helpers, 11 am: Learn how to keep Prospect Park healthy by cleaning up the lakeshore, spreading mulch or removing invasive species. This is activity is led by Alliance staff and all materials are provided.

Help Prospect Park Alliance restore the woodlands with a team of dedicated volunteers committed to the ongoing care of the Park’s 250 acres of forest.

Lefferts Historic House

Scharen Knippen

Join Prospect Park Alliance to celebrate fall at Lefferts with the old Dutch craft Scharen Knippen. Cut out autumn and halloween scenes and patterns some designed in the 19th century by Mrs. Lefferts herself. While you're here join us for potato sack races and other fun historic toys and games.

Campfire Conversations: Wisdom and Age

Join Prospect Park Alliance and Brooklyn Public Library around the campfire for an open dialogue about the treatment and inclusion of elders in contemporary society and how wisdom and knowledge is transmitted across generations. Facilitated by Sonia Sanchez, renowned writer, poet, professor, playwright and activist.

The Means of a Ready Escape: Brooklyn’s Prospect Park

In celebration of the 150th anniversary of Prospect Park, Brooklyn Historical Society and Prospect Park Alliance present an exhibition that celebrates the founding vision of the Park, traces its social and historical trajectories, and examines the important role that Prospect Park has played as “Brooklyn’s Backyard” for 150 years. 

The Brooklyn Historical Society is closed on major holidays.
