Faces and Stories of Prospect Park

Sunday, December 2 , 12 pm – 5 pm, 2018

Join Prospect Park Alliance and Virginia L. S. Freire Photography at the Lefferts Historic House for Faces and Stories of Prospect Park. A photo testament to the individuals, couples, families, friends, and even canines, that make up the vibrant landscape of Prospect Park.

Virginia L. S. Freire is a fine art portrait artist and visual storyteller. Her boutique portrait studio specializes in creating artful portraits telling extraordinary stories that will endure over generations. She is a Brooklyn native with a home-based studio in Prospect Heights where she lives with her husband and two children in the brownstone where she grew up just blocks from Prospect Park.

A Century of Honor

Sunday, December 2 , 12 pm – 4 pm, 2018

Join Prospect Park Alliance for the opening of A Century of Honor, an exhibition that celebrates the impact of the Girl Scouts over the past 100 years.

The exhibition was created by Carol Obler, a Girl Scout who has been involved with the organization for nearly 60 years. The exhibit showcases significant historical artifacts and articles of scouting from the Girl Scout Council of Greater New York and the Girl Scouts of the USA. Many of the pieces on display are from her personal collection, along with donated items from other longtime Girl Scouts and collectors.

The exhibition will be on view through December 30, 2018.

Join exhibit creator Carol Obler in conversation on 11/24, 12/1 and 12/15 from 12–4 pm.

Quilt Show

Sunday, December 2 , 12 pm – 4 pm, 2018

Join Prospect Park Alliance every weekend through January 1 to see the wonderful work of The Brooklyn Quilters' Guild while their small quilt exhibit is on display. This year’s exhibit features the artist’s personal interpretations of Prospect Park. These original creations range from traditional to contemporary to mixed media fiber art.

Every weekend from 1–3 pm, try your hand at making your own paper quilt collage or add to our community paper patchwork quilt!

The exhibition will be on view through January 1, 2019.

Early Morning Bird Walk: 12 Birds of Winter

Not everyone flies south for the winter. Join Prospect Park Alliance and spot Prospect Park’s most common winter birds during their busiest time of day. Tour leaves promptly at 8 am. Led by the Brooklyn Bird Club.

Brooklyn's Largest Menorah Lighting

Sunday, December 2 , 4:30 pm – 7 pm, 2018

The World's Largest Menorah stands at a whopping 32 feet tall (the maximum allowed by Jewish law), and has been towering over Grand Army Plaza since 1985.

Join Chabad of Park Slope every night, where the menorah lighting celebration is accompanied by live music and hot latkes for all. Special gifts are distributed to every child, making this a family celebration and a must on everyone's calendar.

The Means of a Ready Escape: Brooklyn’s Prospect Park

In celebration of the 150th anniversary of Prospect Park, Brooklyn Historical Society and Prospect Park Alliance present an exhibition that celebrates the founding vision of the Park, traces its social and historical trajectories, and examines the important role that Prospect Park has played as “Brooklyn’s Backyard” for 150 years. 

The Brooklyn Historical Society is closed on major holidays.
