Earth Day Celebration

Sunday, April 22 , 1 pm – 4 pm, 2018

Join Prospect Park Alliance at the Audubon Center for our annual Earth Day celebration. Enjoy fun-filled activities for all ages from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), Urban Park Rangers and the Prospect Park Alliance Landscape Management team.

  • Fishing Lessons, 1–4 pm
    Enjoy this fun introduction to catch-and-release fishing. Department of Environmental Conservation’s Bureau of Fisheries and Alliance naturalists will teach participants the basics for fishing in Prospect Park Lake. Bait, tackle, instruction, and fishing license will be provided.
  • Raptors at the Boathouse, 1:30-3:30 pm
    Get up-close and see real birds of prey such as owls, hawks and other raptors. Wildlife specialists will showcase a variety of live bird specimen and will be able to answer all your questions about these amazing creatures.

Prospect Park History Walking Tour

Sunday, April 22 , 10:30 am – 12:30 pm, 2018

Explore Prospect Park with a season of special guided walking tours of this iconic park in the heart of Brooklyn, presented by Turnstile Tours in partnership with Prospect Park Alliance. These two-hour tours will examine the Park’s many layers of natural and human history, from the flora and geology to the architectural eras visible in the built environment.

Smorgasburg, the celebrated open-air food fair presented by Brooklyn Flea in partnership with Prospect Park Alliance, returns to Prospect Park this spring! On Sundays from April through October, over 100 local and regional food purveyors will gather on Breeze Hill to offer a range of cuisines.

Weekend Nature Exploration

Sunday, April 22 , 10 am – 1 pm, 2018

Join Prospect Park Alliance for fun nature activities to welcome the start of spring every Saturday and Sunday!

  • Discovery Pack, 10 am-12 pm: The Prospect Park Alliance invites you to get inspired by nature with our Discovery Packs, a ready-to-go kits filled with nature activities for families

  • Animal Encounter, 11 am-12 pm: Join Alliance Naturalists in learning more about the animals in the Audubon Center’s collection. This program starts promptly at 11 am.

  • Nature’s Helpers, 12-1 pm: Help do your part to keep Prospect Park healthy by cleaning up the lakeshore. In this citizen science activity Audubon staff will guide groups to remove litter and record the findings. Fun for all ages and all materials are provided.  This program leaves promptly at 12 pm.

Lefferts Historic House

Prospect Park Pop-Up Studio

Sunday, April 22 , 1 pm – 4 pm, 2018

We each have a first memory, a special moment or countless stories that come together to define our connection to Prospect Park. This Earth Day, Prospect Park Alliance is partnering with portrait photographer and print artist, Virginia L. S. Freire, to photograph the faces and record the stories of the community members–friends, families and even canines–that make up the vibrant landscape of Prospect Park. These images and testaments will be on display as part of an exhibit this summer at Lefferts Historic House celebrating the Faces and Stories of Prospect Park. Photos session will take approximately 3-5 minutes and will be only on a first-come, first-served basis.

Art in the Parks: Fitzhugh Karol

All Day, Sunday, April 22, 2018

Prospect Park Alliance and NYC Parks presents a public sculpture exhibition by artist Fitzhugh Karol through the NYC Parks Art in the Parks program. Two sculptures of colorful intersecting steel shapes reference familiar silhouettes of stairs and hillsides. Their abstract and playful shapes invite interaction and are a reminder of man’s imprint on the landscape. The two sculptures, titled “Searches” and “Reaches,” will be on display through Spring 2018.

About the Artist:
Fitzhugh Baylies Karol is a Brooklyn-based sculptor and designer interested in the integration of sculpture within landscape and architecture. Fitzhugh’s large outdoor sculptures and public works were be exhibited in three New York City parks in 2017. He has previously exhibited at the Bartow-Pell Museum, Socrates Sculpture Park, The LongHouse Reserve, Rochester Contemporary Arts Center, and The Aidron Duckworth Museum.

The Means of a Ready Escape: Brooklyn’s Prospect Park

In celebration of the 150th anniversary of Prospect Park, Brooklyn Historical Society and Prospect Park Alliance present an exhibition that celebrates the founding vision of the Park, traces its social and historical trajectories, and examines the important role that Prospect Park has played as “Brooklyn’s Backyard” for 150 years. 

The Brooklyn Historical Society is closed on major holidays.
