Bud Light Music Series: Burna Boy + Sampa the Great + DJ Tunez
Burna Boy, Sampa the Great, and DJ Tunez will perform at the Bandshell as part of BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival, presented by BRIC in partnership with Prospect Park Alliance.
Born Damini Ogulu in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, Burna Boy burst into the public consciousness in 2012 at the tender age of 21 with “Like to Party,” the lead single from his first full-length album L.I.F.E. (an acronym for Leaving an Impact for Eternity), released the following year on Aristokrat Records. His “warm, earthy tones applied to menacing trap rap and exuberant Afro-pop create a sound that, even in its darkest moments, sounds like bottled joy” (The New Yorker).
The Zambian-born, Botswana-raised, Australia-based poet, singer and rapper Sampa the Great, “dripping with finesse and black femininity,” (Okayplayer) makes a rare U.S. appearance to open. She includes Mos Def and Chance the Rapper among her influences, and has supported Joey Bada$$, Kendrick Lamar, and Thundercat.
DJ Tunez, the “go-to dot connector in the African community of New York City and beyond,” (Fader) ties it all together, spinning before the show and between sets.
