University Open Air: Making Our Own News

Join Brooklyn Public Library in collaboration with Prospect Park Alliance for University Open Air, a free series of classes taught by professors, researchers, and academics who were trained outside of the U.S. The two-week semester begins on Thursday, September 9th.

A crash course in turning any topic into a newsworthy article. Whether it’s writing for a personal blog or a mainstream publication, attendees will practice the rudiments of writing for an audience using the ‘Three Rs’ method and touch on the principles of journalistic writing. Register today for this class!

About the instructor: Denise Wiley is a journalist, public relations practitioner, and instructor of English as a Second Language. Prior to moving to the US, Ms. Wiley lived in Japan for five years where she taught business English, cultural awareness, and business communication. She holds a BA in Media and Communication and is currently reading for the MA in International Migration Studies at The Graduate Center, CUNY.

Please note, while UOA courses aim to equip students with valuable skills, they are non-accredited.

We will continue to observe social distancing measures as well as requiring masks for participants whenever indoors. Classes will be capped at 12-15 participants per course to ensure the safety of our professors and participants. Safety guidelines are subject to change based on the latest guidance from public health professionals and elected officials.
