Prospect Park History Walking Tour

Sunday, June 3 , 10:30 am – 12:30 pm, 2018

Explore Prospect Park with a season of special guided walking tours of this iconic park in the heart of Brooklyn, presented by Turnstile Tours in partnership with Prospect Park Alliance. These two-hour tours will examine the Park’s many layers of natural and human history, from the flora and geology to the architectural eras visible in the built environment.

Please note there will not be a regular tour on Sunday, October 14, due to Open House New York. Learn more on the OHNY website.

Nestled inside Prospect Park's tree-shaded southwest corner, this much-loved market, occuring every Sunday and Wednesday, is where South Slope and Windsor Terrace residents stock up on locally grown staples. The offerings range from a selection of vegetables, fruits, baked goods, plants, and flowers, to fresh-caught fish and organic baked goods. Smorgasburg Prospect Park

Smorgasburg, the celebrated open-air food fair presented by Brooklyn Flea in partnership with Prospect Park Alliance, returns to Prospect Park this spring! On Sundays from April through October, over 100 local and regional food purveyors will gather on Breeze Hill to offer a range of cuisines.

Nature Exploration

Sunday, June 3 , 10 am – 1 pm, 2018

Join Prospect Park Alliance for nature education programs at the Prospect Park Audubon Center, the first urban Audubon Center in the nation.

  • Discovery Pack, 10 am–12 pm: Prospect Park Alliance invites you to get inspired by nature with our Discovery Packs, ready-to-go kits filled with nature activities for families.
  • Animal Encounter, 11 am–12 pm: Join Alliance Naturalists in learning more about the animals in the Audubon Center’s collection. This program starts promptly at 11 am.
  • Nature’s Helpers, 12 pm–1 pm: Help do your part to keep Prospect Park healthy by cleaning up the lakeshore. In this citizen science activity Audubon staff will guide groups to remove litter and record the findings. Fun for all ages and all materials are provided.  This program leaves promptly at 12 pm.

Turtle Takeover: Prospect Park Zoo

Sunday, June 3 , 10 am – 5 pm, 2018

What’s the difference between a turtle and tortoise? How do researchers track them in the wild? Visit the Prospect Park Zoo every weekend in June where turtles (and tortoises) are taking over. Learn fascinating facts about every member of the chelonian family and find out why many of them are seriously in danger of extinction. Scavenger hunt, keeper talks, live animals and turtle themed activities will take place throughout the zoo!

Pop-Up Audubon I: Incredible Invertebrates

Sunday, June 3 , 11 am – 4 pm, 2018

Join Prospect Park Alliance to examine the tiniest creatures in Prospect Park. Pop-Up Audubon I is best for ages 8 and under. Pop-Up Audubon is made possible through the generous support of Con Edison and the Brooke Astor Fund for New York City.

  • Adventure Hike, 12 pm–1 pm: Alliance naturalists will introduce you to the natural history of Prospect Park and the Park's hidden trails. Recommended for families with children 5 and older. This program leaves promptly at 12 pm.
  • Nature on the Go!, 1 pm–2 pm: Join Alliance naturalists to discover the diverse array of aquatic life by examining the specimens of Prospect Park Lake. This program leaves promptly at 1 pm.
  • Nature's Helpers, 2 pm–3 pm: Learn how to keep Prospect Park healthy by cleaning up the lakeshore, spreading mulch or removing invasive species. This program leaves promptly at 2 pm.
  • Family Birdwatching, 3–4 pm: After learning how to use binoculars, join our naturalists to identify some of the 250 species of birds that call Prospect Park home. This program leaves promptly at 3 pm.

Pop-Up Audubon II: Water Detectives

What's in our water? Join Prospect Park Alliance to Investigate water chemistry and identify macroinvertebrates in and around the upper watercourse. Pop-Up Audubon II is best for ages 8 and over. Pop-Up Audubon is made possible through the generous support of Con Edison and the Brooke Astor Fund for New York City.

Family Camping: Brooklyn

Saturday, June 2 , 6 pm – Monday, June 4, 7 am, 2018

We camp to create lasting memories, connect with the natural world, and bond with our families. Camping affords us the opportunity to unplug from the diversions of everyday life and to laugh and play with our families. The Urban Park Rangers celebrate the tradition of camping and we look forward to welcoming your family. Family Camping programs take place in all five boroughs, but space is limited and families are chosen by lottery. Selected parties will be notified of meeting locations and other details. We'll bring tents!

The Means of a Ready Escape: Brooklyn’s Prospect Park

In celebration of the 150th anniversary of Prospect Park, Brooklyn Historical Society and Prospect Park Alliance present an exhibition that celebrates the founding vision of the Park, traces its social and historical trajectories, and examines the important role that Prospect Park has played as “Brooklyn’s Backyard” for 150 years. 

The Brooklyn Historical Society is closed on major holidays.
