Vale Restoration
Transforming the Prospect Park Vale into a place for Brooklyn’s diverse communities.
Through $37.5 million in funding from the City, Prospect Park Alliance is transforming key landscapes in the northeast corner of Prospect Park. Untouched by restoration for more than 50 years, the area has recently benefited from the restoration of the Flatbush Avenue Park Perimeter and creation of two new park entrances, a major restoration of the Vale woodlands, as well as path and lighting improvements to make this area of the park more welcoming and accessible to the public.
To shape the vision for these restored landscapes, Prospect Park Alliance, the non-profit organization that cares for the park in partnership with the City, collaborated with Hester Street in an intensive, two-year community outreach process, which resulted in funding allocation in 2021 from Mayor Bill de Blasio for its restoration. The Alliance’s award-winning team of architects and landscape architects have designed a space for nature exploration, intergenerational gathering and quiet reflection.
The Vale restoration transforms two key landscapes: the historic Children’s Pool (a decorative water feature) and a former Rose Garden, and also encompasses an additional 3 acres of woodland restoration. The restoration of the Children’s Pool will bring back historic details while improving habitat for birds and other wildlife. The former Rose Garden will be transformed into three connected landscapes that respect the park’s historic design while restoring the woodland landscape and adding new amenities, including: a pollinator garden and planted arbor; a children’s nature exploration area; and a picnicking lawn and small pavilion with all-gender composting restrooms and a shaded viewing terrace.
