Park Drive Rules + Safety

To ensure everyone’s safety and enjoyment of Prospect Park, please follow these rules and safety guidelines.

Designated Lanes and Direction

  • Cyclists, skaters and vehicles must travel in a counterclockwise direction at all times with a maximum speed limit of 25 miles per hour.
  • Pedestrians (runners, walkers, children under 14 on bikes) must use the designated pedestrian lane, located along the interior of the Park, and may travel in either direction.
  • Cyclists and skaters travel in a counter-clockwise direction and use the center lane, and can use the right lane to pass.
  • Vehicles travel in a counter-clockwise direction and use the right lane.

Hours for Vehicle Traffic

  • East Drive (northbound, Park Circle to Grand Army Plaza): Monday–Friday (except holidays), 7–9 am
  • Drives are closed at all other times to private and unauthorized vehicles.

Always be mindful of cyclists, skaters and vehicles on the Park Drives. Even when drives are closed to traffic, authorized vehicles may be present.

Other Rules and Safety Guidelines

  • Pedestrians at crosswalks should push button and wait for walk signal then proceed with caution.
  • Obey all traffic signals and road signs. Bicycles must stop at red lights.
  • Bicycling and skating are permitted only on the main Park Drive, Center Drive and Wellhouse Drive. Walk your bike on pedestrian paths.
  • Helmets are required for children 14 and under, and are suggested for everyone riding bikes or skating.
  • Bicycles must be equipped with bells or similar warning devices, and have headlights, tail lights and reflectors after dark.
  • There is a yellow emergency call box approximately every 1/5 mile on the Park Drive and at every vehicle exit.
  • Reflective clothing is encouraged at night.

Please remember that the rules of the road are in effect regardless of the hours cars are allowed on Park Drives.
